Intro to Biblically Responsible Investing
Over the years I have been asked numerous times some version of, “Is there a way I can direct my investments where I want them to go?” After further conversation it was more about, can I direct them where I don’t want them to go?
For me, finding a viable solution to this has been on the backburner but not forgotten. I have considered this approach for years and researched the options available during that time. With the recent events in Ukraine and Russia I have become more convicted it’s time to roll out a solution to our clients and friends.
BRI is short for Biblically Responsible Investing. There are a handful of financial institutions that now have a sufficient history that allows me to be comfortable with their process.
The world’s story for investing is the pursuit of maximum risk-adjusted returns. But what does God’s story say about how we should invest?
As Christians we aim to be faithful Christ followers in every area of our lives. When it comes to investing, though, many investors have little idea of what faithfulness could look like.
Some of you are aware, however, many investors are surprised to learn they are profiting from and supporting immoral activities such as abortion, pornography, and human trafficking within their investment portfolios. When we intentionally or passively invest in the S&P 500 we are supporting some form of ungodly activity.
The financial institutions we will be using have created screens and filters to exclude companies that engage in or support abortion, pornography, human trafficking, lifestyle, rights, and other issues that violate Biblical principles. Their faith-based filters represent areas that are more closely aligned with clear teachings found in Scripture.
There are also screens designed to identify companies making a positive impact on the world and creating positive Biblical change.
This approach will not be for everyone. We will continue to offer and manage our client’s current and existing portfolios.
However, if you are feeling the angst (if not disgust) wondering if you’re invested unknowingly in some of the evil in the world, then Biblically Responsible Investing may be a fit for you (or some part of your portfolio).
If we’ve talked about this before or you feel like this is you, send me an email or schedule a quick call and lets talk about how BRI may work for you and your portfolio.
