Our dishwasher went out last week. That’s OK we expected it could happen soon and Angela has been waiting for an upgrade. ?
We found a ‘great deal’ on a nice Samsung dishwasher that had just been returned. Since the boys and I are always fixing things around the house, and I had installed the last one 7-8 years ago, we brought it home.
We jumped in and tackled it right away. We pulled the old one out, went back to the store to buy a part that was missing (surprise), hooked up the new one and pushed it in place.
We ran the first test. Since it’s a fancy new machine it turned off when it sensed a water leak! I thought that was cool. I noticed it was leaking a little water at the intake line. No problem, that’s an easy fix. We took the line off, used a little more plumbers tape and it stopped leaking. However, the machine wouldn’t run. It’s still thought there was a leak! Smart machine.
Because it’s so smart, we unhooked the whole machine, pulled it out and turned it on its side. We took off the bottom of the machine and dried the water sensor. OK that was a pain. I was no longer enjoying this ‘great repair experience’ with the boys. We hooked it all up, pushed it back into place and ran another test. It worked great! However, the second wash (with dishes in it) showed another leak. How could that be!
We took it all apart again and found the drain hose had a crack in it. Who would’ve thought? We cannibalized the old hose and made it work in the new machine. Pretty creative and the boys were impressed. We hooked it all up, pushed it back into place and ran another test. And… we had another leak!
After taking it all apart there was a small crack in the old hose. How did that get there? It wasn’t there before. Maybe I shouldn’t have let Joshua play with it after we had removed the old machine? Since I didn’t want to order a Samsung replacement hose and wait for it, I went off to the store looking for a solution. No problem, I found a great guy at the store who suggested plumber’s epoxy. He is assured me it would work. It didn’t.
Now the latest solution. When I get home tonight (Wednesday) the part in the picture is about to provide dishwasher salvation for the whole family!
So what’s the moral of the story? I’m not sure yet, the story isn’t over. Stay tuned.
Hoping your little repairs around the house are successful and much more enjoyable!
