I have conversations regularly about how to finance long-term care issues through your 2nd Half. Given the opportunity, I would much rather have conversations about being healthy and enjoying a long and meaningful 2nd Half.
For many, I realize this isn’t always possible. Some I talk to don’t want to enjoy a long 2nd Half. I do believe, at every age you have the ability to affect your health with the decisions you make.
Years ago I thought my exercise could override whatever I chose to eat. (I know– that’s not very smart!) I thought I could run or exercise enough to overcome whatever I put in my mouth. Not only did I enjoy running, I felt I was staying in shape, or at least keeping my weight down.
I’m not saying regular exercise (or at least movement) isn’t important. In the last five years I’ve come to realize that what you put in your mouth is much more important. It’s not about the right diet. It’s about your eating habits. So much of the chronic disease we suffer in America stems from some of these basic lifestyle choices.
I received a recent email from the Blue Zones Project that led me to the article: Why Diet and Exercise Don’t Work. Maybe you’ll find it helpful as you consider what changes you might consider if you need to return to better health.
I remember in the early 90’s when my mother started college. She was in her 50’s and was required to take a PE class. As a class assignment mom (and dad) started walking around the block many nights each week. In time they started walking farther. We didn’t live in the same town and I remember how impressed I was the next time I saw them. Both of them felt better, looked better and had lost weight. They had more energy, physically and emotionally.
Of course, we’ll continue to talk and plan for financing possible health care events that may come in your future but wouldn’t you rather be sharing with me and others about the great adventures you’re enjoying throughout your 2nd Half?
