I’ve had numerous conversations over the years about telling your heirs about your estate plans. I always recommend telling someone. Don’t keep it a secret.
Do not feel compelled though to share all of the details. At least one person should know where to find your estate documents and account information. This would include your will, power of attorney(s), life insurance policies, investment accounts, real estate details; essentially anything of value.
I recommend reviewing your beneficiaries every five years. Even if nothing has changed it’s worth being sure. The stories from the 60 Minutes expose on the insurance industry are tragic. This can and should be prevented.
If you’re stuck with questions on your estate, guardians, trusts, beneficiaries or similar call me. I’m happy to give you some food for thought before you call an attorney and get started.
Your estate plans, whether good or bad, will affect the ones you love the most.
